Haere ra Arahura
I'm looking a little stunned in this picture. That's because I'm playing Captain Stubbie, who is responsible for the final voyage of the Arahura before she is retired from the Interislander fleet. Alongside Cohen Holloway I helped entertain the guests on the final voyage as well as MC the formalities involved. The audience was a fascinating mix of former crew, original passengers from 1983, TranzRail and Interislander folk and dignitaries.
Over the course of the evening we got hear some great stories about the ship, including her role in the Mikhail Lermontov rescue and the subsequent KGB investigation featuring a certain Agent Putin. It was no wonder Chris Finlayson, the Minister responsible for the SIS was there on the night!
As Captain Stubbie and an engineer Cohen and I mingled with the guests and got plenty of great stories about things Arahura, from passenger stories to stories about her construction in Denmark. We even managed to find someone who spoke Danish to farewell the ship in the "tongue" of her birth.
The other cool thing about the function was that I had completely forgotten that in his distant past Cohen had actually worked on the ferry helping to load cars onto the vehicle deck, dressed almost identically to the HiViz costume we had him in on the night. There were several occasions where he was actually talking to old colleagues of his from his days on the ship!
It's one of the great things about being in this line of work that I can now say I've been in volved in a function to farewell a ship!
